Twenty percent of the world's population, 1.4 billion, live in extreme poverty, existing on less than $1.25 per day.

One of the tragic consequences of poverty for women is the huge risk associated with having a baby.
Every year 536,000 women and girls die due to complications associated with their pregnancies.
99% of these deaths occur in the developing world.
A woman's chances of dying while in childbirth:
Canada: 1 in 11,000
Sierra Leone: 1 in 8

What: This is a bicycle adventure designed to save the lives of mothers and newborns in Sierra Leone. Participating riders will cycle over 500 kilometres of dirt roads and jungle single-track. Although Sierra Leone is one of the world’s poorest nations it is also a country blessed with great natural beauty. It posseses granite mountains, dense rain forests and expansive white sand beaches.
When: The Tour will take place in January of 2012. It will begin in the cool mountain town of Kabala and progress through remote villages, a national park, flat savannah, and terminate on the beaches of Freetown.
Why: All proceeds raised by this philanthropic adventure will be spent in Sierra Leone on: Constructing and equipping safe birthing huts as well as training traditional birth attendants and nurses through the Api Mami/Plump Baby Project.
How: Each participating rider will commit to covering his own expenses and raising an additional $10,000 in support of CAUSE Canada’s Maternal Child Health Care Initiative. For more information or to get involved contact CAUSE Canada at: info@cause.ca or 403-678-3332
