My position as an environmental technician on the remote northern coast of Honduras has given me a unique opportunity to engage with the Garifuna people, particularly the strong, admirable women working in the agriculture sector. Prior to my time in Honduras I wanted to work with marginalized women and girls in the developing world, yet I felt I lacked the technical skills and experience necessary to do so. During the past six months I have spent a lot of time researching and implementing appropriate environmental management and agriculture technology in the field. Sharing information about composting and organic agriculture and supporting the CAUSE projects was important. However, I eventually came to realize that the most effective way I could help the Garifuna women was simply to work alongside them, encourage what they are doing, and share my life with them. It is because of the relationships that I built in Honduras that I feel confident and compelled to continue working in this field, and for this I am incredibly grateful.
