As a CAUSE intern, I have been asked to write a brief paragraph describing my greatest success to date, whether personal or professional, that I have had in the past 5 months here on the north coast of Honduras. With respect to my project work, I would rather rephrase it as what I am most pleased with to date since a) it has yet to be completed, and b) the success can only be gauged at a much later time. So, having said that, I have high hopes about what the household compost project we are trying to initiate has to offer. Part of my time here has been spent researching and choosing an appropriate composting method for the region (while another large part has been spent doing all sorts of random tasks!). I am currently putting the finishing touches on an easy to follow manual in Spanish, which includes not only the composting steps, but also explanations of how the process works, that eventually will be used in training courses within the various communities. Since most of the waste generated within the Garifuna villages is organic, hopefully with time and further planning, composting can be incorporated into a community wide waste management plan, with the resulting finished compost being used as organic fertilizer on the various crops that grow in the region.
