It’s hard to imagine that my time in Sierra Leone is almost over. It has been one of, if not the best experience of my life. I have been exposed to things that some only read about in books. It’s been a beautiful, challenging, and rewarding experience.

I’m terrible at saying goodbye. I don’t like doing it and I avoid it if I can.

My last two weeks in Ciriboya passed in the blink of an eye. Before I knew it I was back in La Ceiba, sitting at a round table with all of the CAUSE Canada local staff (and Nanigui) enjoying a really great meal and a few good laughs. Another blink of the eye, and Shannon, Rosy, Paty and I are sitting around the table in the CAUSE office in La Ceiba saying our goodbyes. It is hard to believe that that moment has arrived, when eight months ago it seemed so far away.

Imagining the end of a journey is almost impossible when you first begin. I can say that with a degree of certainty as I write this blog post on my last official day in the field with my CAUSE Canada internship.

Two weeks ago in Guatemala there was one of the largest earthquakes recorded in the last 35 years, which has caused enormous damage and dozens of deaths in different cities and communities of Guatemala. To hear an earthquake, feel it and see the consequences are three completely different things.

I never thought life in rural Guatemala could be quite so action packed - that is until all the comings and goings of last week proved me wrong. Not only was November 1st the All Saint’s Day horse racing celebrations here in Todos Santos* but we also had some welcome visitors - Roland, our Canadian supervisor at CAUSE Canada and Rick from Mariposa Effect, which is a microcredit bank working with CAUSE.

Sadly, in September the organic agriculture program came to an end in Iriona, and Luis our agronomist has since moved on to greener pastures (in this case a new agricultural project with a Honduran campesino organization).
