To market, to market...

Buying and selling here in Ciriboya and its neighbouring communities is a strange and mysterious process that largely relies on word of mouth and the networks of relationships built among people both within and between the villages.

Here in Ciriboya we don't hear a lot about what is happening in the outside world. A newspaper trickles in every now and again, and sometimes news will spread by word of mouth from someone who was recently in the big city. And so, Shannon and I have assumed the quiet life, and its really not so bad. However, every now and again there is that itch to go to the Big City, see the bright lights, be around a lot of people, and drink something that is not the same temperature as the air outside.

I am not a mother, and although I have to admit to being captivated by the abundance of babies everywhere I go here (I just want to hold them all! Even the ones that are probably gonna pee on me!), I really don’t feel even remotely prepared to be one. I’ll be 28 in a few days though, and by local standards that’s pretty much over the hill for someone who doesn’t yet have at least two or three kids.

Now that we are knee-deep in the micro-credit program, I am starting to see how the women’s projects here in our communities are linked to the larger Honduran economy and how this causal relationship affects the lives of CAUSE’s participants.

Ciriboya isn’t on the electrical grid, which means that, unless you have a solar panel or a generator at your house, you have to get by without power.  This has actually been surprisingly easy for us to get used to.

We have gotten down to business. This past week saw our first (almost) full work week - don’t worry, we haven’t been playing hooky, Semana Santa and Garifuna celebrations interrupted the other two weeks - and I’m beginning to feel like I have a pretty good grasp on the micro-credit program.

If you’ve ever spent any time in any part of Latin America, then you have probably realized that holidays here… are kind of a big deal.

When this internship first began November seemed so far away. It’s scary how quickly time has passed and that in just a few short days we will be returning to Canada.
